Spirit Breakout

Matthew 3:11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

Acts 1:4-5 4 And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”

Spirit Baptism-

  1. Destroy Hang- ups

  2. Belief that the Spiritual gifts are no longer in operation today.

Cessationist- one who believes some or all gifts are no longer in operation today.

Continuationist- one who believes all the gifts of the Holy Spirit are operational today.

Two main positions held by cessationist

  1.  The Gifts were only for the apostles and for the foundational launching of the church.

1 Corinthians 13:8-12 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.

1. The 70 who were commissioned in Luke 10:9, 19-20

9. Believers in Rome (Rom. 12:6-8).

10. Believers in Corinth (1 Cor. 12-14).

  1.   If you acknowledge the validity of the Revelatory gifts such as prophecy and word of knowledge it would undermine the finality and sufficiency of the Scriptures

I Thessalonians 5 ESV

19  Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not despise prophecies, 21 but test everything; hold fast what is good.

  1. Hyper Emotionalism  (Gen 1:27) (Psalm 62:8)

  2. Spiritual Manipulation (Acts 17:11)

When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.

B.  Baptism of Holy Spirit subsequent to salvation Acts 8:14-17

14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had accepted the word of God, they sent Peter and John to Samaria. 15 When they arrived, they prayed for the new believers there that they might receive the Holy Spirit, 16 because the Holy Spirit had not yet come on any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17 Then Peter and John placed their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

C.  After initial event of filling with the Holy Spirit keep pursuing.  Ephesians 5:18-19

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, 19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,

D. Evidence of speaking in tongues

  1. Tongues as an understood language – Acts 2:

And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Now there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men from every nation under heaven. And at this sound the multitude came together, and they were bewildered, because each one was hearing them speak in his own language. And they were amazed and astonished, saying, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans?

  1. Tongues as a heavenly language – 1 Corinthians 12:28

And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.

I Corinthians 14:2 For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit.
