Salty Pt 1

Ephesians 2 ESV

8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

James 2 ESV

20 faith apart from works is useless? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? 22 You see that faith was active along with his works

and faith was completed by his works; 23 and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God. 24 You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone.

We are not saved “by” our works

But we were created in Christ “to do” good works.

Saved by faith “in His work.”

Ephesians 2

10 we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus FOR good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we SHOULD walk in them.

Matthew 5 ESV

13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet.

14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

1. Since we are saved by Grace, some would argue that our works are insignificant.

James 2 ESV

14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him?

James 2 ESV

20 faith apart from works is useless

Romans 6 ESV

1 What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that grace may abound

2 By no means! How can we who died to sin still live in it

3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus

4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

5 For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his

6 We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin

7 For one who has died has been set free from sin

Romans 6 ESV

11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Faith without works is useless!

2 Not everyone gets a ribbon. Trophy/ prize

New man, new works!

1 Corinthians 6 ESV

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

Faith without works is useless!

3. We have a choice to make.

Ephesians 4 ESV

17 Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. 18 They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. 19 They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

Legally, we have to give permission.

Revelation 3 ESV

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Ephesians 4 ESV

20 But that is not the way you learned Christ!— 21 assuming that you have heard about him and were taught in him, as the truth is in Jesus,

22 to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires,

“Put it off because it’s corrupt.”

It’s corrupt = In a state of decay, rotten, putrid.

Ephesians 4 ESV

23 and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds

24 and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.

“Put it on!”

We have a choice!

The life of God

Or to be alienated from God.

Ephesians 4 ESV

25 Therefore, having put away falsehood

let each one of you speak the truth with his neighbor, for we are members one of another.

26 Be angry and do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,

27 and give no opportunity to the devil.

28 Let the thief no longer steal, but rather let him labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with anyone in need.

29 Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

31 Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice.

32 Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.
