Romans 3:19-28 ESV
19 Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it— 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. THIS WAS TO SHOW GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
Romans 4 ESV
15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.
16 That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring
“Our righteousness depends on faith, but it rests on Grace.”
Our purpose:
To develop effective Christ followers who demonstrate the heart of heaven on earth.
1. Our Righteousness
Romans 3 ESV
None is righteous, no, not one;
11 no one understands; no one seeks for God.
12 All have turned aside; together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even one.
Righteousness –
faultless, innocent, guiltless.
2. Our righteousness Depends on faith.
Faith is……
Belief in something.
Being completely convinced of something.
Absolute trust in something.
Faith is our part of a legal transaction with God.
MY FAITH IS WHAT ACTIVATES THE LEGAL ACTION THAT GOD HAS ALREADY TAKEN.
Meaning we access what God did through faith.
Propitiation -
The act of appeasing and thereby incurring divine favor or avoiding divine retribution.
Justified – declared innocent.
Redemption –
Our ransom paid in full.
(Our sin debt)
All of these are accessed through faith.
Righteousness APART from works.
Apart from the rules (613)
Apart from performance
Abraham “believed” God
Circumcision is eliminating flesh.
The Law of Faith
VS The Law of Works.
3. Our righteousness depends on faith and it Rests in Grace.
Ephesians 2 ESV
4 But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5 even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved—
8 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9 not a result of works, so that no one may boast.
Our righteousness Depends on faith but It rest on Grace!
Grace – His favor as an undeserved gift.
(His favorable declaration)
To show how righteous God is and to reveal how just God is.
This is the foundation….
The starting place.
